Miguel is a young and beloved fisherman in Cabo Blanco, a small fishing village in the Northern coast of Peru, where there’s deep-rooted traditions about death. Miguel is married with the beautiful Mariela, who is 7-months pregnant with their firstborn, but also has an extremely secret love affair with another man, Santiago, a painter that has been living in the town for a year and that is rejected by the townsfolk for being agnostic and so open about his sexuality.
Santiago accidentally drowns in the ocean and returns after his death to ask Miguel to look for his body in the ocean and bury it according to the rituals of the town. This is the only way in which his soul can rest peacefully and not wander forever in this world. Miguel finds himself at a crossroads since, according to the tradition, only the closest male to the deceased should be in charge of the burial. If he does it, he would be acknowledging in public his relationship with Santiago and ruining his marriage and his reputation in the town. If he doesn’t do it, he would be sentencing his lover to wander endlessly without rest. Miguel is forced to deal with the consequences of his acts and to come to terms with who he really is, even if by doing so he stands the chance of losing the people he loves the most.
